Review of The Beaver (2011) by Joe D — 13 Oct 2011
One glance at any trailers or previews create the impression that The Beaver is cheesy, oversimplified, and harbouring a bizarre premise that seems only to belong in a bad comedy.
The reality is that this film takes a pretty good stab at depicting depression, multiple personality disorder, broken families, and personal demons without glossing over or forcing a definitive resolution. It's not a feel-good film about a man getting his life back on track through a comical cockney beaver, it's an open-ended struggle and very poignant in the way the characters deal with and communicate their respective troubles.
I wouldn't go as far as to say this is a great - or memorable - film, but its intriguing and unique and rewards those that dare to delve deeper than its silly exterior depiction.
