Better than any movie about a guy-who-uses-a-beaver-to-talk should be. The Beaver is actually a fairly compelling tale of a man who sinks into the depths of depression, and eventually can only communicate through the use of a puppet he finds in the trash.
Gibson is strong in the lead, with Foster underutilized in the co-star role (she also directed). A dark film that examines the effect of depression and mental illness on not just those who suffer from it - but also the families and friends around them.
Quirky without resorting to being just another gimmick film.
