Review of The Beaver (2011) by Michael M — 22 Jun 2013
Say what you will about Mel Gibson's personal life and beliefs, the man is still able to prove his cinematic chops. This is one of the boldest performances I've ever seen from any actor. The idea is a little silly, but it's still a believable concept, and it's intriguing to watch how it plays out.
I was never quite sure which direction the film was going to go in, and what starts as a comically dark scenario ends up becoming just plain dark near the end. It's all handled with realism and a natural feeling though, and the twists never feel abrupt.
A tragic story, but one that still holds hope and humor. An amazing film.
