Review of The Beaver (2011) by Jade C — 08 Dec 2013
Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster never crossed my mind as a great movie couple, but they definitely pull it off in The Beaver. Perhaps after Mel Gibson's public melt down in reality, he was able to tap into a character with deep mental issues.
Never the less his performance is impeccable as the movie shows his slip into depression that is only save when a failed suicide attempt causes him to develop an alternate personality, that is channeled through a hand puppet.
What is the hand puppet? You guessed it, the new personality and puppet are "The Beaver." After developing this alter ego, Mel's character becomes better at work, more fatherly and a better husband, only to have the grim reality set in that he cannot interact with the world through a beaver hand puppet that has a British accent forever.
This also causes a mental breakdown and *SPOILER ALERT* ultimately leads to him sawing his arm, and the puppet, off in his garage. This movies will hit home for almost anyone who is familiar with mental illness or is simply a fan of the cast.
Great movie to watch with the wife.
