Review of The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years (2016) by Mark F — 23 Sep 2016
The Beatles were my favourite band of all time when I was a teenager - I had all their albums, including the curiosities, marvelled at their inventiveness, their prolific output, their melodies, and I knew their story inside out.
That said, I didn't expect anything new from this documentary and wondered if it was worth re-telling what's already been told thousands of times over.
I think it was though. Firstly, for the new footage which has been edited together in a really engaging way. The colour video in particular really brings the whole time alive. I love the way they animate the still shots and album covers. Ron Howard has done a great job of telling the story in an engaging way and conveying just how crazy and culturally significant Beatlemania was. And explaining the forces that brought the touring years to an end. You also get a nice mix of narrative from the key players.
Basically it's a great job. I just have issues with the values The Beatles stood for and what they became. Hence, although I still believe they're the most creative and significant band of all time, I don't actually like what they heralded.
