Review of The Beastmaster (1982) by Juan C — 14 Sep 2010
The most interest for this film comes from thinking that it is most likely a film aimed at children, yet features aspects that would give it a red flag if released today. The nudity and S&M sequences are at the forefront of my thoughts. As are the bodies with the skewers though them.
Rip Torn is particularly menacing in this film. In fact the sequence when he throws a child into a fire is horrendous! It I was a child watching this I would be traumatised! Conversely the hero himself does kill a lot of people on his adventure.
There are some interesting plot devices. One is in fact having the protagonist deal with circumstances by himself and no one to emote to for a significant portion of the film. There is also the unexpected conflict that allows for sequences to remain unresolved.
Overall though the ride is rather dreary. It seems so generic and lacks any points to elevate itself. Was it really worth the tiger dying a premature death from being painted black?
