Review of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) by Mel V — 02 Feb 2008
Monster Movies Really Began Here. Ray Harryhausen's work on the Rhedosaurus is truly refined and arguably his magnus opus, the plot settled all the motions for future monster movies to come, i.e. our hero is a scientist and apparently New York stand out like a soar thumb, target-wise.
Unlike other monster flicks, Atomic energy is briefly mentioned, but not a main theme in one unlike Godzilla for instant, gee I wonder why. The movie's climax is pretty amazing, watch out for Lee Van Cleef.
This is monster-flick for people who don't want to watch a CGI monster or a clown in a rubber suit.
