Review of The Beach (2000) by Luke F — 11 Sep 2009
The realtionship between books and movies is usually fine and occasionally wonderful and occasionally terrible.
People love stories - narratives of events and how people move and change through them. Books are one of the most fertile fields from which filmmakers have harvested from.
There is the physical actions of the character and the interior thoughts, literature is perhaps the best form for examining the latter. The Beach as a book is excellent, it's high praise as a latter day Lord of the Flies is, a touch over the top but not out of the ball part. It's a great book that focuses on the interior thoughts of Richard (the main character) and his observations of humanity, tourism and our desire for authentic experiences. But somehow the highlights of the language is lost in the making of the movie and what is left is a hollow carcass that goes through the motions.
Read the book.
