Danny Boyle and Leonardo DiCaprio have a clear path they take with this character Richard; every scene Boyle constructs, and every action DiCaprio makes, shows us the darkness that consumes Richard through out his journey.
To me this film as ties with themes from Fight Club, trying to find paradise in a fucked up world. In Fight Club they atempt to make paradise out of the world, in The Beach they try to find paradise away from the world.
