Review of The Battleship Island (2017) by Marshall U — 07 Aug 2017
A pure work of fiction with many historical inaccuracies: the workers were Japanese and Korean, not entirely the latter; there was no wage discrimination; if anything was 'forced,' it was to save money as these workers had a tendency to drink and gamble; men were not snatched off the street to work on the island - this is utter fantasy; the final battle escape scene is also entirely fictional if there ever was one, and there was no plan to destroy the island by Japan - the island still stands and there are descendants of the area who can speak the truth.
I can understand how much 'anti-Japan' sells in S. Korea, but the director really seems to overdo things. Perhaps he should focus a little on S. Korea's immediate northern neighbor.
