Review of The Batman (2022) by Justinvannort — 05 Mar 2022

The Batman was an ambitious project that mostly worked for me. What sold me was it’s depiction of Gotham. It reminded me a lot of the video games! The streets of Arkham city are poorly lit and very grungy.

Majority of the film takes place at night which adds to the film noir experience Reeves was going for. I absolutely loved the cinematography and the color grading felt appropriate for the story. The new bat mobile is a stand out as well! The performaces were solid across the board and I completely bought Pattinson as Batman.

Alright, now lets talk about what didn’t work for me. This movie is 3 hours long and it really feels like 3 hours. I love the LOTR trilogy and many other lengthy films but this one did drag at times.

Also the climax went by very quickly and didn’t have the payoff I was hoping for. The villains were interesting and gave impressive performances but never went big enough for this kind of story. Overall, The Batman is a georgous film with some incrdible moments and certainly worth a watch.

I’m just not sure If I can recommend seeing this one in the theater. I think it will look great on a 4k tv and having the ability to pause and take a break will be a huge benefit.
