Review of The Bat Whispers (1930) by Steve G — 24 Mar 2012
Most of those who have seen it probably did so for the same reason. The influence it had on Bob Kane in forging the epic Batman legacy. Even though 'The Bat' is the villain in this film, one can clearly see the parallels between the two. This film is very noirish & mysterious. Really, the noir elements are so stark, that one is surprised that it's rarely mentioned among the initial exemplars of the genre. It's all here!
It really is an excellent movie. Great story. Great ending. Superb villain. Worthy of being compared to Batman.
The minor quibbles for me relate to the fact that the closer it got to the climax, the more frantically the comic relief started behaving, and that became annoying. The comic relief was a little over the top.
Also, some loose ends as far as motives & behavior could've been more neatly tied.
