Review of The Basketball Diaries (1995) by Na D — 19 Jun 2009
Boring movie based on a great memoir by a punk legend. A cast of over-rated celebrities did little to boost interest. Jim Carroll gets a cameo as some old junkie telling Jim Carroll an imaginary story about doing heroin in church; funny since his famous album is called "Catholic Boy".
I read an interview with him and he was upset when he thought that River Phoenix was going to play him... "does he even know how to play basketball? After all, his parents were hippies?" Couldn't quite figure out the logic of that one, and it still seemed like Leo made little difference when the script and direction weren't all that great any way.
