Review of The Basketball Diaries (1995) by Samuel D — 09 Aug 2009
Similar to Christiane F. Young, talented sportsman played by the fantastic De Caprio, leads a normal life alongside his best friends. Eventually, to escape the mundane routines and torturous nature of attending a strict Catholic school in 70's New York, he and his friends turn to drugs - eventually heroine.
He becomes an addict, destroys his relationship with his mother and one-by-one, his friends all become wrapped up in the prison system due to addictions/theft/murder. Great acting, wonderfully scripted with an especially poetical narrative.
Based on a true story, I believe.
