Review of The Basketball Diaries (1995) by Kim B — 15 Jan 2011
Based on a true story of a young addict with some disturbing scenes. I didn't realize Wahlberg was in this movie til I saw it. Ok so it got a bit dramatic/wallowing in self-pity at times and since the screenplay is written by a high schooler it's not very in-depth.
However, I appreciated it for it's honesty. We also quickly go from being a punk teenager with angst to free-falling addiction with very little transition/explanation. One of the best scenes was at the end with Jim and his mom.
I guess I really loved the subject matter and the dream sequences, that and Leonardo DiCaprio as always. They are a lot better drug movies out there, but I still liked it a lot. I am interested in reading the real book after viewing the film.
