The Basketball Diaries has a good lesson, be careful with drugs and know that addiction can happen and screw up your life. My problem with this movie is that the first 45 minutes of the movie feels like a completely different movie than the last hour.

It starts with a group of kids that play basketball at a catholic church that are "punks" and have a dying friend, then with the line "did I every tell you the first time I did heroin" it jumps off to way different movie.

I get that the first part was to show how much potential they had before the drugs got to them, but Kalvert could of smoothed over the transition. Also it shows Jim doing heroin for the first time and then the next time we see him he is in full addict mode, and when he was recovering its withdraws to perfectly fine, should of shown some of the inbetween stuff to be more dynamic.

Overall a pretty good movie, the acting is laughable at times which is an odd feeling because it happens during scenes that aren't suppose to be funny.
