Review of The Barkleys of Broadway (1949) by Brian S — 17 Dec 2009
Whatever chemistry Fred and Ginger had in their earlier films is trumped about tenfold in this film--one of the best show-business married couples I've ever seen. being both an F&G movie and an Arthur Freed project, the storyline is obviously a bit cookie-cutter, but the presentation is still excellent.
most of the songs are pretty forgettable, but the dance numbers are awesome and Oscar Levant's piano numbers are pretty classy as well. a beautiful way to close the Astaire-Rogers chapter in movie musicals.
