Review of The Barefoot Contessa (1954) by Bill M — 13 Apr 2009
I liked this movie at first viewing; I like it better with each viewing; and I see new things every time I view it. I would call this a film buffs movie because it is steeped in the movies and makes lots of knowing references.
It is also a heady, meaning appealing to the intellect, movie with a lot of talk that is not dialogue between characters. For example Humphrey Bogart refers to and describes the story of Faust---not what you would normally expect from him.
It shows two actors, one a pretty good actor and the other a stunning woman and also pretty good in her role, interacting as the leads in this movie. The movie contains some good humor, some tragedy, some romance, and something to think about.
An interesting bit of trivia is that the story at the end revolves around the Italian phrase cher sara sara, if memory serves me correct, which means whatever will be will be. Makes you wonder where Hitchcock got his idea two years later in The Man Who Knew Too Much when Doris Day sang Que Sera Sera?
