Review of The Bank Dick (1940) by Tim M — 29 Jun 2009
A hilarious film by Fields which has him at his best. The timing is good and the film flows nicely never getting stuck at any one point. The stooge Shemp Howard has a nice turn as the bartender of the Black Pussy Cat Cafe, and the rest of the cast work nicely with Fields.
The gags are timeless and are not limited to the time period - they work just as well today. Fields seems to be the only character who can't stay up to speed which adds extra laughs. Fields wrote the screenplay, under the name of Mahatma Kane Jeeves, and it is a clever one.
The little comedic moments are equally funny to the big ones and if you are a fan of Fields and his style of humor and slapstick then you will love this one.
