Review of The Bank Dick (1940) by Allan C — 06 Sep 2015
Most W.C. Fields fans seem to favor "It's a Gift" as his best film, but I've always liked "The Band Dick." I'm not sure what's drawn me to this one, but I've always loved Fields' blowhard character in this one.
In this film, drunk family man Fields manages to brag his way into a bank guard job. There's family comedy and some pretty funny bits with Fields trying to prevent a bank examiner from looking at the bank's books.
Fields wrote the screenplay too, using the pseudonym Mahatma Kane Jeeves, which is a play on the phrase "My hat, my cane, Jeeves" which fields is actually given by his butler at the end of the film.
It's an old timey style of comedy that may not be to the tastes of modern audiences, but for fans of old time vaudevillian comedy, this one is essential viewing.
