Review of The Bang Bang Gang (1970) by Kevin A — 09 Nov 2011
Shane Black makes his directorial debut. After spending his 80's by being responsible for some of the coolest action movies and making giant pussy jokes he finally decided to direct. And he has a slam dunk on his hands.
He does well keeping the frenetic pace and allowing the audience to catch up only to get lost again. And never in a bad way. Keeps you guessing. The razor sharp wit, shockingly fast-paced and hysterical dialogue, pulp-fiction-esquire vibe, its pure cheesiness and the cynicism of a beat up old paperback detective novel.
And then it attacks the forth wall with a wrecking ball. Downey, Kilmer and Monaghan are all larger than life exhibiting great chemistry. And hey look. They gave Corbin Bersen a good role. That was nice of them.
It's not a movie for everybody. It's unconventional story telling will throw some off. But I loved every moment of this.
