Review of The Band's Visit (2007) by Alexavier R — 21 Mar 2008
This is a wonderful little fllm, made with a lot of intelligence and humor. A group of musicians who make up an Egyptian Police band find themselves stranded in a small Israel town. What follows is a night of small revalations and a carefully observed human comedy that is wrought with the realization that there is a sense of lonlieness that prevades all of our lives.
Each conversation the characters share reveals a little more about past lives, dreams, and other pathos. What's great is the film acknowledges that the little bit of alienation that flows in all of us, a sense that the greater forces of the world aren't understandable and we are at their mercy.
The fact that the film plays with this idea but still infuses every scene with warmth and humor is quite a compliment and the film deserves many more.
