Review of The Band's Visit (2007) by Mark W — 22 Jun 2008
Loneliness belongs to no single nation, culture or language - and this simple Israeli story of a lost Egyptian band has universal truth without any clever special effects, one-liners or musical themes.
Blows away the comic obsessed northern summer fast food tie-ins - but oh so gently, with sad, visual humour and heartfelt dialogue in the sorry tales of six lonely people thrown together for a single night.
The husband who can't connect with his wife yet inspires the band member who just hasn't "had time" to finish his concerto; the naive man helped on his first date by the youngest Chet Baker-loving band member; and the desperately lonely cafe owner, who works overtime to get something from the stiff band leader: it's heart-breaking then laugh out loud then tragic.
Easily the best film I've seen for a long time.
