Review of The Band's Visit (2007) by Seth E — 19 Aug 2008
For such a slow, simple plot, 'The Band's Visit' displays a complex 'day-in-the-life' for a band consisting of Egyptian police officers on a trip to play in Israel. The use of language in this movie is interesting, the Egyptians speak Arabic, the Israelis speak Hebrew, but they both speak English (to some extent), and this works almost like a 3-way-radio in several of the scenes.
Unless one is tri-lingual, subtitles are a must on this movie. The acting is decent, and the cinematography is above average. Minimalist movies work if and only if they hold the audiences interest, and for the most part 'The Band's Visit' succeeds.
