Review of The Band's Visit (2007) by Imgonnaget S — 18 Dec 2009
I watched this with my Egyptian friend from my dorm which made it an especially fun experience for me. We could both not stop smiling the whole time!
The movie is predictable and even though it is from the middle east it contains the influence of some American Indy films through out it's story. That being said, it did predictable impeccably. The character's are so well drawn and the subtle, observing direction elevate it above a mere sweet import to a artistic vision of two different cultures converging in a small, lonely town. The scene with Haled silently helping the loser get the girl in the roller rink is pure cinematic gold!
Don't be turned off by the foreign label, this is one movie that will make even the most mainstream of American moviegoers smile.
