Review of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018) by Olavl — 16 Jan 2021
Hell to the **** yeah. The Coen brothers haven't lost a single step, despite their decades of work. They write, direct, and produce this movie so well, that at times I wondered if I was just imagining the sheer quality of it all.
All six vignettes are great, though some greatly outshone the others. My personal favourite was probably the one about the prospector, though they all were so great it's hard to say. The performances are amazing, especially Liam Neeson, who put a lot of personality into a character with very little dialogue.
If I could criticise, I'd say that the tones of the different segments vary, so it doesn't flow as well as it could've. I think it might have been interesting if the Coens made a miniseries with the same parts, but I digress.
All in all, a great movie with some pacing issues too few and inconsequential to really matter. Great movie, and I can't wait for whatever the brothers decide to do next.
