Review of The Bad Seed (1956) by Melea P — 03 Jun 2008
Patty McCormack was indeed creepy, but I had trouble believing that most people did not see through her sweetness and light act. Part of my problem with the movie was its advertising. Even the trailer for the movie itself categorizes this as a horror movie: and it so isn't.
It's a maternal melodrama. Had I watched it thinking it was gonna be a melodrama, I probably would have enjoyed it much more. Also.. .the big shocker... isn't. If you're seeing this movie for the first time over 50 years since it was released.
.. it's not a shocker. Moreover, I'm sure this made a much more interesting play, because they did very little staging and cinematography to make it little more than a recorded stage production: there were no use of flashbacks or point of view shots that would have muchly aided the movie.
The acting was superb. The concept was really cool. The rest of the movie... not so much.
