Review of The Bad Batch (2017) by Random V — 02 Oct 2017
An alternate America where the government has made a place to quarantine its dregs (trying to leap that razor wire might be worth the risk!). Wandering a desert landscape, people quickly fall victim to others making desperate and poor choices. The overall mood has a bleak laziness, with only a few characters exhibiting creative industriousness. Our protagonist isn't exempt from making poor choices either. She fights as best she can, temporarily succeeding to escape one type of predator only to find another, then run back to another. We can only guess at the ending, whether she finds a safe place, or if she shares a fate with the rabbit; something to hang on to and love until desperation creates necessity.
The dialogue is sparse, but what's there to say in an underdeveloped wasteland anyway?
