Review of The Back-Up Plan (2010) by Adsila Roxana C — 27 Dec 2010
J-Lo is charming as ever in this bland rom com but she alone does not help the cliché ridden plot.
Lopez plays Zoe a pet store owner who is obsessed with having kids. She says she can't find the right man so she rather has them on her own. She goes to a fertility clinic and gets vitro fertilization done. She doesn't have high hopes of getting pregnant but she pulls through. One day she meets a nice guy named Stan played by Alex O'Loughlin in a cab and they start to go out and they begin to like each other. Resulting in them starting a relationship, but then she actually gets pregnant. Stan has his doubts about this but he likes her and wants to stay with her. The problems begin.
Check out how cliché this movie is:
1. The dog eats the pregnancy test, of course he does she needs to go out with a date with Stan first to like him then get the inevitable news.
2. He appears as a cheese salesman but then we find out he owns a very impressive farm.
3. There's always a girl he works with that the other main character is jealous of her.
4. Friends giving bad advice.
5. She left her career for something more rewarding. (Wow rom coms don't like successful women.).
6. The guy is always doing something he doesn't like and then quits.
7. Slapstick comedy.
8. They break up for a stupid reason.
9. They get back together again running after each other like always.
10. The man finally does what he wants to do in life.
The movie was directed by Alan Poul a TV director and producer and it should stay that way. With the list of clichés up there you have seen it before so why bother, the jokes is not even that funny. If you're going to make a birth scene funny do it right Judd Aptow did it in Knocked UP, this is just plain disturbing. I think it's disrespectful to show an instrument that goes in a woman's vagina to be shown on screen with blood. In Knocked UP they do the same thing but funnier and less disturbing. If want to go see a romantic comedy see 500 Days of Summer or if you want to see clichés watch something better The Proposal.
Please don't watch this movie or I'll hang myself.
MP ** 2/5.
