Review of The Babymakers (2012) by Derek M — 18 Sep 2012
I don't think I would have even laughed at this movie when I was 17. It is one that believes it is laugh-out-loud hilarious (poorly framed jokes and gags and all) although it was one that left me scratching my head wondering if people truly do find things like this to be funny.
Jokes are blatantly set up scenes in advance ... which makes the film predictable and tiresome. We know what is coming ... and when is that ever really good unless it is an adaptation of a favorite book? Tommy (Paul Schneider - Bright Star, "Parks and Recreation") and his wife (Olivia Munn - "The Newsroom", Magic Mike) decide to have a baby after 3 years of marriage only to find out not everything is really working.
Tommy is the problem but he realizes he can remedy everything because of his massive amounts of sperm donations 5 years ago to a local sperm bank. Oh the hilarity of him figuring out how to steal the ONE remaining sample (that has already been promised to a gay couple).
The entire film is a "really?!" Movies like this make me feel snobbish simply because I have some functioning brainwaves. I like Munn; but there isn't much else here to enjoy as it is all too implausibly stupid for me even try to appreciate.
Uhm ... I don't think so ... and the filmmakers don't have to try again.
