Review of The Babadook (2014) by Alex B — 07 Jun 2018
It's a nice horror flick that relies on the protagonist''s slow slip into insanity to drive the movie. The child though could be the most annoying actor ever and I didn't think he was that good, he was loud just to be loud.
There wasn't emotion behind his ill-behavior, so he grew annoying and annoying fast. It seemed like he was just reading his lines and when he was done, he was done. The mother was great and you believed her slip into insanity caused by her disobedient child.
Then the ending came along and just confused the crap out of me. Its greatest weakness (out of the terrible child actor) was bringing the storybook villain to life. He should have always remained a mystery.
Something that made the audience wonder if all of this was a product of a woman ran too thin as a widow, a single mother, and major bread winner. I guess some could argue Ms. Kent did just that , but it seemed like the movie was hell bent on telling you no, this boogeyman is real.
I was glad that it didn't rely heavily on this genre's cliches and when it did use them it felt natural and logical.
