Review of The Babadook (2014) by Emil D — 02 Jun 2015
The trend of Horror movies of the past few years that have actually been awesome continues with Babadook. Usually even the good horror movies focus on mortal terror from an unrelenting antagonist which this movie does have (at least we think it does, no spoilers here) but Babadook's focus is of what evil lies within us when we are pushed to the brink even by those we love.
In this case it is a mother pushed by her child persisting in his extreme misbehavior and instance on a boogeyman from a book. It is the anxiety and the stress of this that is made truly palpable by brilliant performances and the strange in your face cinematic style that grabs you so tight you will sweat bullets.
Truly efective horror comes from reflecting what we dread in our real lives and amplifying it. Babcock puts your fears through the roof and then some. Strap yourself in.
