Review of The Babadook (2014) by Matt D — 19 Aug 2015
After hearing this flick get talked up for months and months I guess I was expecting something a little more than your standard possessed person storyline.
In many ways this movie features the standard plot points of a 'Goosebumps' novel in that:
A. Our hero encounters a strange relic/legend etc. but laughs if off.
B. Weird shit starts happening to make our hero think twice.
C. Our hero becomes convinced about the "evil" thing they're encountering is a real threat.
D. No one (friends, family, police, neighbors) believes in our hero's concerns and assumes he/she is crazy.
E. Our hero must confront the evil on his/her own and hope to survive.
I personally didn't think 'The Babadook' added much to this time honored storyline aside from a truly frightening mother/son relationship and some creepy visuals of Mr. Babadook himself.
