The Babadook, an incredibly smart and artfully crafted horror masterpiece, proposes the scariest notion of all, that the darkest monsters come from inside of us, and to defeat them we have to first defeat the darkness inside ourselves.

It's a film about the destructive power of grief and if not overcoming it (which is almost impossible) at least learning to live with it and to nurture it, and not let it destroy you, your loved ones and your life.

It's a potent story of loss and a frightening portrait of a woman slowly loosing her mind. It's also a genuinely scary movie to boot. A fiercely original, imaginative, gorgeously made, powerfully acted and intelligent horror classic up there with The Shining, Eraserhead and A Nightmare On Elm Street with which it shares thematic and stylistic elements.

This review of The Babadook (2014) was written by on 14 Nov 2015.
