Review of The Babadook (2014) by Rohit P — 27 Dec 2015
If a great movie is one that makes you care about the characters, this is absolutely a great movie: you get really, deeply involved in the story of Amelia and Samuel , thanks to the great perfomances of the two actors (the child is 6 y.
O and he's absolutely an amazing actor!!!) . Part "The Shining", part "the Exorcist" and part "The Sixth Sense". And, as RT points out in the summary of the movie, it doesn't relies on "cheap jump scares" : bonus points for that.
It doesn't relies on gore either, even if some scenes are a bit more violent and disturbing. Pure psychological terror (after watching the director interview I understood that this is a precise choice , it's the core of the movie, actually) .
I am not totally convinced about the ending of the movie that, while very interesting and original, I feel worked better in the short movie ("Monsters") that inspired Babadook than in the feature movie derived by it.
It feels a bit...strange and out of place, in the context of the film, but i'm sure many will find, on the contrary, the ending one of the best thing of Babadook, for its originality.
