Review of The Babadook (2014) by Don S — 17 Oct 2017
Completely mystified. This is the movie people are touting as one of the best horror movies of the decade? I must be out of tune with the genre. This is basically Candyman, but instead of being told a game we get the story from a book.
We also get no special effects to speak of, no scares (not even lame jump scares), no feelings of terror for me, and no likable characters to invest in. What we get is a mentally deteriorated mother who is ill-equipped to handle her neophyte sociopathic six year old.
As you'd guess, she loses it and tries to get rid of her protagonist, first by telling him a story then setting about to make it come true. And we get some really bad acting to boot. I know I'm in the minority, but I think this would be better suited as a psychological drama than a horror movie.
I was not impressed at all.
