Review of The Babadook (2014) by John K — 13 Sep 2015
The Babadook works harder than your average horror movie, but unfortunately it's work doesn't pay off as much as it could have it didn't stumble a few times along the way. Trying to remain as vague as possible to avoid spoilers, a superb opener really entices you but Samuel reveals a certain something to Amelia's coworker so early within the film that you're forced to sit there for another 75 minute waiting for a return of that initial brilliance, only to never see it again.
Kent's directing was really good, especially when it came to handling Essie Davis, but her screenwriting ability could use some work in the way of restraint.
