Review of The Babadook (2014) by Kirstie K — 16 May 2017
**Review contains spoilers** It's rare that I can find a horror movies these days worth five stars, but this is it. This movie, while a little depressing throughout (kind of the point!) is incredibly on point with the problems of motherhood and depression.
It follows a woman whose inability to process her husband's death leads to a non-relationship with her son. Her demons form a physical representation when sleep deprivation enters her depression. "The Babadook" seems to be her son's terror at the darkness he sees in his mother, the real reason he can't sleep, and he is terrified it'll take her away (ie suicide) from him.
Ultimately, the choice comes down to fight or flight - whether the depression swallows her, or whether she can finally find the light that came out of a terrible situation.
