Review of The Awful Truth (1937) by Kristen S — 19 Dec 2008
A wonderfully executed comedy about a married couple that discovers their greatest joy comes from playing games about being apart. i'm absolutely floored by irene dunne's performance. and of course cary grant is wonderful in his traditional persona, but dunne was a surprising revelation.
the banter between these two is worthy of oscar wilde: "Things are just the same as they always were, only, you're the same as you were, too, so I guess things will never be the same again. " beautiful cinematography - goes hand in hand with 'my man godfrey.
' i'm recognizing a type in these films - they all seem to have one vaguely european (read: gay) threat to the male protagonist. it seems that coding him as 'gay' is how period directors/writers would signal to their audience that 'this man is in fact not a threat to our heroes.
' of the films i've seen so far, these guys appear in 'the awful truth,' 'top hat,' and 'swing time.'.
