Review of The Awakening (2011) by Duncan S — 17 Nov 2011
When boys at a country boarding school start to see the ghost of a small boy, ghost hunter and sceptic Florence Cathcart is brought in to prove its all a big hoax. Once there she starts to experience ghostly goings on and realises all is not as simple as she initially thought.
Taking its cue from The Innocents and the more recent The Others, this has a marvelous sense of period and atmosphere, some genuinely creepy moments and three great performances from Hall, West and Staunton.
Where it loses its grip is in the final act, where it feels the need to have every little plot point explained and the back story behind the haunting played out for the audience which severely lessens the shock.
