Review of The Awakening (2011) by Ethan S — 21 Sep 2014
A misguided film that wants to be something more. The writer tries so hard to make sure we understand the story, but what good is a story if it simply isn't worth the internet fee it took to watch the damn thing? On the surface, it would appear to have a little something for everyone: love, scares, murder, a creepy caretaker, a skeptic protagonist, a damaged (but sexy of course) war veteran.
It all just seems so...trite. Personally, I believe this film really could have been something if it focused on the love story. It was the only part of the film I cared about at all. Too bad its snuffed out as soon as it began.
Rebecca Hall is capable, but has nothing to work with. Her character lacks focus and her motivation is often times unclear. At first, the film gives you a clear foundation to work with. This is our hero.
She is a skeptic with a troubled past, involving the death for her true love. This drives her to disprove the afterlife, because it makes her feel bad. I don't know, it was all very silly. Ghost Hunting as self mutilation? Sorry, but I don't buy it.
It seems like a cheap way to make her emotional. Another thing I would like to point out are the in-your-face style explanations of the film's themes. This is a line, and I quote, "we may as well be ghosts ourselves.
" No, thank you.
