Review of The Awakening (2010) by Martin O — 23 Nov 2011
A very emotionally driven movie, it's almost a shame that they made this movie a horror movie as the jumps and scares, whilst effective, distract from the intense emotion at the centre of it.
The plot kicks into gear fairly early and the first act establishes the premise out of the gate. The second act is quite strong but as experienced movie goers, we can tell its not really over. In the final act things lurch wildly from premise to premise and the movie loses a bit of cohesion. Throw in a major plot twist and the movie is never dull!
Rebecca Hall plays her emotionally damaged character with a sort of wild eyed intensity that is very emotional. Meanwhile Dominic West is very good in his supporting role. Imelda Staunton is great, as ever . The child cast are generally good as well.
The final few moments of the movie waver between silliness and intense emotion, so I think most audiences will find themselves standing between buying into the final sequence or find it to be foolish.
Worth a try!
