Review of The Aviator (2004) by Aaron A — 03 Dec 2010
Well, it needed close to 3 hours to tell the story of Howard Hughes. AS always, Leonardo DiCaprio stole the spotlight.
This film obviously focuses on Hughes as the Aviator. But the interesting parts of the film centered on the sub-plots, like his mental disorder, his failed love life and his crazy film directing. He clearly was a remarkable person when it came to aviation and this would right away interest the audience. Leonardo DiCaprio was phenomenal, showing fantastic emotions that many actors and actresses lack somehow nowadays.
In terms of the quality of the entertainment, of course, it's no doubt magnificent. What do you expect from a director like Martin Scorcese? However, I don't know if the movie would've worked out if it weren't for DiCaprio. Quite simply, without a strong lead character, this film would've tumbled. So, the film was a little too dependent on him in the middle. But, we have to say, the mental scenes were excellent in a self-disturbing way.
Personally*... Why make this film so long?
