Review of The Aviator (2004) by Crystal H — 21 Sep 2010
For Fans Of: Scorsese, rich nut jobs, slick big budgets.
Date Night: Nope.
Art Factor: Medium.
Fun Factor: Low.
Emotional Factor: Low.
Intelligence Required: Medium.
Essential Viewing: No.
We all know Scorsese up this film had been denied the Best Picture Oscar. We all know it was a crock of shit that he had been denied up to this point. No statues to show for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull or Goodfellas was and still is a great crime. But I got say, until thhis movie I never really felt like Scorsese made one designed to get him that damned elusive golden man. Everything about The Aviator screams they gotta give it to me this time. Great script? Check. Killer cast? Check. Direction? Check. The one thing this movie left me wanting and in the end I believe left the academy wanting was some sort of emotional connection. I never once felt really invested in any of the well being of the characters. I never felt love or hate or sadness or anger toward anyone on the screen. It just kind of grabbed me while I was watching it but let me down instantly the moment I was done. The three films I mentioned early were not lacking in that way. I still say Scorsese dorks of course should see it and anyone who is into historical drama should check it out, but it might just run a little long and dry for the casual movie fan.
