Review of The Aviator (2004) by Michael R — 15 Nov 2010
Martin Scorsese practices filmmaking on a grand scale in this epic of an American tycoon, who is driven and at times bound by his obsession. DiCaprio captures this character in a brilliant and award winning (although only Oscar nominated) way that completely portrays Howard Hughes' brilliance and eccentricities with such intensity and realness that it was hard to take your eyes off of him.
Scorsese also gets the most out of such a wonderful supporting cast filled with fantastic actors, sometimes in just the slightest roles. Not the least of which is Cate Balnchett in her award winning role as Katharine Hepburn.
More so than just fine writing and fine acting, Scorsese brings such amazing style to this film, providing memorable shots and wonderful use of color, costume design, and scenery. It's just truly an all around wonderful film in my opinion.
Scorsese and DiCaprio are just a match made in heaven.
