Review of The Aviator (2004) by Jay L — 12 Jan 2011
"There's too much Howard Hughes in Howard Hughes...that's the problem.".
Director Martin Scorsese, Producers Michael Mann and Leonardo DiCaprio all collaborate to bring us this epic saga on the life of Howard Hughes. Howard Hughes was a tumultuous obsessive compulsive germaphobe that most of the time let his work get the best of him. Whether it was directing huge big budget films with limited money or assembling the largest commercial airline of his time, Hughes set some high standards for himself and the peope around him. The Aviator is an all around beautifully shot film that has the traditional Scorsese slick and stylish swagger to it. It's the story of one mans demons getting the best of him, but ultimately he prevails in the end both mentally and physically. Even after a near death experience in a plane crash, and a catstrophic mental breakdown, Hughes never quit or gave up. I think the Aviator captures the overall life of this man perfectly, very well written and shot by a veteran film maker.
Leonardo Dicaprio stars as Hughes, and does a great job. The performance earned him a Golden Globe and an Oscar Nomination, well deserved in my book. Cate Blanchett was great throughout as well as the love interest Howard Hughes. Alec Baldwin makes a few appearances and definately doesn't disappoint. Great acting throughout on this epic drama.
All though the film drags for quite some time, it's ultimately a brilliant true story and collection of facts of a seriously clever and interesting man. This along with the style of Scorsese and Mann make The Aviator a must see film.
