Review of The Aviator (2004) by Ethan T — 28 Mar 2011
The Aviator is an old-fashioned event picture, and in recreating the Hollywood high life of aircraft and movie mogul Howard Hughes it is never less than lavish. Di Caprio is compelling as Hughes, particularly in depicting the jarring contrasts between the confident high-flying tycoon and the paranoid, virulently obsessive-compulsive wreck that Hughes would later become.
The Aviator won five Oscars, but it's Cate Blanchett's winning turn as Katherine Hepburn that stands out: she's note perfect and consistently lights up the screen.
