Review of The Aviator (2004) by Paul P — 17 Dec 2011
Absolutely fascinating and wonderfully crafted. This entire cast is fantastic! DiCaprio adds another great performance to his mantle. Cate Blanchett has a tricky job of playing Hepburn but she nails it.
The real scene stealer for my money is Alan Alda, a clinic in sliminess. The cinematography, art direction and costume design capture the time brilliantly. The movie suffers greatly from two scenes of childhood flashbacks that try to sum up Hughes in 10 seconds.
If you think you can sum him up in one moment why are we following him for the entire length of a film? But even with those scenes this is one of Scorsese's best in the post Goodfellas era.
