Review of The Aviator (2004) by Nate W — 23 Jun 2012
Leonardo DiCaprio gives one of his finest career performances as the paranoid and germophobic aviation pioneer Howard Hughes. Under the always-impressive direction of Martin Scorsese, "The Aviator" avoids the banal cliches of the biopic and becomes more a study of the character than of the character's life.
Backing DiCaprio up is a very impressive cast of character actors who all deserve hearty applause for their fine work (special mentions for Cate Blanchett and Alan Alda). Slickly crafted and designed, the picture drips of 1940's nostalgia, as many of Scorsese's films tend to do.
Thelma Schoonmaker's editing is a particularly strong bragging point for the film, with one aerial sequence in particular that's guaranteed to get your pulse racing!
