Review of The Aviator (2004) by Rendy S — 26 Nov 2013
The story takes place in the 1920s-1940s and tells the biopic of real-life film director and writer Howard Hughes played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Using his passion for airplanes, he makes his first project, a WWI air epic called Hell's Angels.
The film becomes a massive success making Jean Harlow played by Gwen Stefani a star and having a romance with Katharine Hepburn played by Cate Blanchett. Meanwhile, the silent film era has passed and Howard has started designing new planes setting air speed records, flying around the world, and risking his life testing aircraft.
He has also found time to romance Ava Gardner played by Kate Beckinsale and founded his own airlines, Trans-World Airlines. Over the years, he has gained many powerful enemies including Juan Trippe, the head of Pan-American Airlines played by Alec Baldwin and Senator Ralph Owen Brewster played by Alan Alda who attempt to prove Howard that his radical design were actually part of an effort to bilk taxpayers for millions of dollars through government contracts.
The film to have a concept about planes is seemingly likeable. The direction and writing is pretty strong. All the actors do an Oscar-worthy job especially Leonardo DiCaprio who pulls it off as Howard Hughes and steals the show most likely.
The Aviator gets a 8.5/10.
